With 14,504 violent crimes, including 316 murders, in 2013, Detroit kept its notorious status as the most dangerous city in the nation, according to FBI crime statistics released Monday.
The FBI’s analysis shows Detroit’s per capita murder rate – 45 per 100,000 people – makes it more dangerous than New Orleans (41 murders per 100,000 residents); Newark, NJ (40 murders per 100,000 residents); St. Louis (38 murders per 100,000 residents); and Baltimore (37 residents per 100,000 residents), The Detroit News reports.
The per capita violent crime rate in Detroit was also higher than any other U.S. city, according to the report.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the the city plans to invest $1.7 billion over 10 years to increase public safety, reduce blight and make improvements citywide, according to The Detroit News. The newspaper also said murders and violent crime are down in 2014, and the city could have fewer than 300 murders for the year for the first time in half a century.
Detroit, Michigan’s largest city, retained its dubious distinction despite an 18 percent decrease in murders and a 3 percent decline in violent crime from 2012, the FBI said. Nationally, murders are down 4.4 percent and violent crime is down 4.1 percent, the FBI said.
The report measured violent crime in cities with populations of 100,000 or more. That meant Flint, which had a higher murder rate than any other U.S. city in the 2012 FBI report, wasn’t on the list because of population losses. The city now has a population of 99,941.
However, Michigan state statistics, show Flint reported 48 murders and 145 rapes in 2013, and saw violent crime drop 31 percent. Nationally, Flint was the fourth-most dangerous among 756 cities with populations greater than 50,000, just below neighboring Saginaw, which was the third most-dangerous mid-sized city in the nation.
Some of the safest cities in America are in Michigan, according to the FBI report. Sterling Heights, for example, had no murders in 2013, and violent crime there was ranked 46th among 290 cities with populations over 100,000. Ann Arbor was ranked the 47th safest city in America.
In Michigan, West Bloomfield Township, Troy, Novi and Farmington Hills are among some of the safest mid-sized cities, according to the report.
In a footnote to the report, the FBI cautioned against using the data to rank cities. Crime statistics for Chicago, for example, weren’t included because that city of 2.7 million people uses methods to collect data of rape that don’t match those used by other cities, The Washington Times reports.
