Kevin Phillips Charged With Murder Of Kevin “Flipside” White Of Rap Group O.F.T.B.

A 26-year-old man is facing murder charges in connection with last Monday night’s shooting death of a well-known rapper, Kevin “Flipside” White, and Markice Delshawn Brider in Watts, police officials said.

Kevin Phillips, also known as Chris Smith, has been charged with two counts of murder with gang allegations after police believe he shot White, 44, and Brider, 29, within 10 minutes of each other.

Police said that Phillips, along with at least three other men, shot White and a woman from a minivan in the 1600 block of East 114th Street about 7:25 p.m.

About 10 minutes later, Brider was walking near a gym in the Imperial Courts housing project when the same minivan drove up, multiple people exited and shot him, said LAPD Det. Sal LaBarbera.

The other men remain at large, LaBarbera said.

Police believe the homicides were precipitated by a shooting at 2:15 p.m. Monday in the 2100 block of East 101st Street in Watts, where a man was grazed by a bullet in the head, LaBarbera said.

Authorities have seen violent crime decrease significantly in Watts’ public housing developments over the last few years. This year, the neighborhood has seen 12 homicides, according to the L.A. Times Homicide Report.

The Imperial Courts housing project hadn’t seen a homicide in nearly two years before June 23, when Floyd Darnell Videau was killed.

“It feels like we’re taking a couple steps back,” LaBarbera said.

Over the last week, interventionists and community activists have spent “countless hours” on the street attempting to squash retaliation. Extra patrol officers have also been deployed.

Phillips was taken into custody several hours after the shootings and is being held without bail, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department online records.

Phillips is expected to be arraigned Oct. 3 in L.A. Superior Court.
