IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.
FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.
I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.
I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. I’M GONNA MISS HEARING HIS SIGNATURE MONOTONE VOICE WHEN HE WALKS IN THE ROOM, BUT THE SONGS WILL ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO ME….HIS RHYME FLOWS WERE INSANE, AND I WILL NEVER REMOVE HIM FROM MY HEART AND SOUL…….REST IN PEACE TO THE MAN WHO FELT “SATISFACTION FROM THE STREET CROWD REACTION” … I LOVE YOU GOO…….DJ PREMIER
I am terribly sorry for my brief absence. Dropping knowledge is what I do and I will not apologize for it. I have no corporate master looming in the shadows out to get me. Shit, if they are well I guess those was the ones who took my pedophile clip off my page, oh well shall I continue? Damn recently Hip-Hop lost another legend whose raspy and streetwise lyrics blended with the gritty production of DJ Premier. Fuck what you heard Guru was the man hands down! Back then cats like Premo and Pete Rock was slaughtering tracks with horn laced samples. It seems like 2010 is off to a bad start with Weezy locked up, Gucci locked up, Boosie locked up, Apache passes away,Little Brother breaks up and now this?
Gangstarr has its place as one of Hip-Hop’s most innovative rap group know for its jazz fused music. Guru born Keith Elam died from cancer(Myeloma) at the age of 47. I really could have spent this entire blog entry on his musical career and added to thousands of bloggers writing the same shit. Recently I visited a few blogs that describes Solar as being Guru’s “partner” and collaborator. The other day I viewed Premier on a Sirius broadcast responding to the allegedly final letter praising Solar and discrediting Premo. And with the next quotes coming from him it immediately all made sense, Guru was involved in DL relationships with Premo and Solar.
Why on earth would Premo be quoted as saying, ” If you love him, and you’re taking care of him, why the fuck did his nails look longer than a ruler?!” I took the logo on my shirt and rubbed it against his whole body and told him a message from me about how much I loved him, and that we were still for life. Then I kissed him on his face and let him know that he was going to miss him. I’m sorry but something just doesn’t sound right regarding a man’s emotions as if he was describing a male lover.
Solar didn’t fair any better by producing a doctored letter conveniently tailored as if it were a will. He also recently addressed the rumors and said that they were completely false and completely unfounded. I know that my assumptions might seem a little far fetched but then again Hip-Hop would be the perfect place to hide a homosexual relationship. I’m no Terrance Dean (Hiding in Hip-Hop) but doesn’t these Hip-Hop beefs nowadays seem like lover quarrels? For years fans speculated over the splits between Dipset founder and co-founder Cam and Jim Jones, 5o Cent and Game, and legendary rap duo Eric and Parish from EPMD to name a few.
Caring for your homie is one thing, yet keeping your “partner” estranged from his family is another. From the very moment Guru was hospitalized last February for cardiac arrest and slipping into a coma due to a cancer that is related to HIV, I felt Solar actions didn’t make the accusations disappear any faster. If Guru was gay, he lived most of his life in a clandestine homosexual relationship and unfortunately for him he didn’t have his lover to care for him during his final days. The fact of the matter is that the world of Hip-Hop has lost another pioneer and will be sorely missed. Gangstarr has been one of my all time favorites and his legacy will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in Peace Guru.
